Lastly, barriers will be considered. The Future of Nursing: The IOM Report Nursing is ever-changing and this last decade is not an exception. Nursing has experienced a shortage as our population is growing older and the need for nurses has increased. Combating this issue and others that the IOM lists, a partnership between the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ensued to form a two-year plan to evaluate nursing and impose improvements for the health care field. Examinations of challenges within the United State’s healthcare system were completed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This foundation is a philanthropic organization who is dedicated to promoting health and bettering health care. This dedication led to the partnership with the IOM in 2010. The collaboration supplied guidance for nursing as well as routes to decrease or eliminate barriers to nursing practice(Kershaw, 2011)
